FAQ

Careful protective packaging for a Jian Zhan tea cup before U.S. shipment

Questions before you choose a cup

FAQ

Below are the most common questions about Jian Zhan materials, glaze variation, shipping, care, and choosing a cup from Mo Lan.

Product and Craft

Are the cups handmade?

Jian Zhan cups are made through ceramic forming, glazing, firing, and selection. Subtle differences in profile, glaze flow, speckling, and color are expected and are part of the character of the craft.

Will my cup look exactly like the photos?

We use product-specific photos whenever possible, including dual-view images. Screen color and lighting can vary, but the listed cup is presented to show its actual glaze personality as clearly as we can.

What are fine mineral streak and oil-spot glazes?

They are traditional names for visual effects in Jian-style glazes. Fine mineral streak usually refers to fine vertical streaking, while oil spot describes clustered metallic or crystal-like speckles.

Why do some cups cost more?

Price reflects glaze clarity, visual rarity, form, finish, selection quality, and the care required to present and ship fragile ceramic teaware.

Origin and Story

Why is Jianyang important?

Jianyang in Fujian is closely associated with historic Jian ware and the ceramic culture that made dark tea bowls famous in the Song dynasty. We use this context to explain the aesthetic language behind the cups.

Are the page images documentary photos?

Some product photos show actual cups. The atmosphere images on About, Craftsmanship, and FAQ are visual impressions created to explain environment, history, and process. They should be read as educational brand imagery, not documentary proof of a specific workshop.

Shipping, Returns, and Care

Where do orders ship from?

Orders for the United States and supported international destinations are prepared from our Los Angeles-area warehouse. Checkout is in USD.

How much is shipping?

U.S. checkout offers Standard Shipping at $6.90 and Expedited Shipping at $14.90. International flat rates are Canada $24.90, Asia Pacific $34.90, Europe and the United Kingdom $39.90, and Rest of World $59.90.

How is a cup packed?

Each cup is protected with cushioning materials and packed to reduce movement in transit. Report damage within 3 calendar days of delivery with the order number and photos of the item, packaging, and shipping label.

How should I care for Jian Zhan?

Rinse with warm water and use mild dish soap when needed. Avoid abrasive pads, sudden extreme temperature changes, microwaves, and dishwashers unless a specific listing says otherwise.

Can I return a cup?

Eligible unused items can be returned within 30 days of delivery. Contact us before sending a return. Original shipping and import charges are normally non-refundable.

How do I choose my first cup?

If you want warmth, look for amber, ember, or gilded tones. If you want a cooler, dramatic surface, start with moonlit, silver, or snowfall-like glaze movement. Choose the cup that makes you want to make tea.

Shipping, Customs, and Delivery

Do you ship outside the United States?

Yes. Mo Lan is set up for international orders. Delivery time and shipping cost vary by destination, and buyers are responsible for any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees charged by their country.

Where do U.S. orders ship from?

Available inventory ships from our Los Angeles-area fulfillment location. This helps U.S. customers avoid long overseas dispatch times for items already in stock.

How are cups packed?

Jian Zhan cups are ceramic objects, so we pack them with protective material and a focus on reducing movement inside the parcel. Report damage within 3 calendar days and keep the item and packaging for review.

Care and Choosing

How should I clean a Jian Zhan cup?

Rinse with warm water after use and dry gently. Avoid harsh abrasives, sudden temperature shock, and dishwasher use unless a specific product page says otherwise.

Which glaze should I choose first?

Choose by feeling first: amber fine mineral streak for warmth, moonlit mineral for sparkle, gilded glaze for earthiness, and silver veil for a cooler, quieter look.

Are these antiques?

No. Mo Lan sells contemporary Jian Zhan-inspired teaware, not antique Song dynasty ceramics. Historical language is used to explain the craft tradition and glaze vocabulary.

Where should I start browsing?

Start with all Jian Zhan cups, then narrow by glaze family. Inventory is maintained in small batches and may not be restocked after it sells out.
